Iloilo city: More applications for the net metering and lifeline rate programs are anticipated in Iloilo City following the pronouncement of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), in 2023, signed a tripartite agreement with MORE Electric and Power Corp. and the local government to establish a satellite one-stop shop office in Iloilo City. This initiative aims to streamline the processing of net-metering and distributed energy resources (DER) applications, allowing consumers to contribute to the renewable energy supply.
The net-metering program is available to households and businesses with solar renewable energy facilities with a capacity of less than 100 kilowatts (kW). In contrast, DER targets large businesses with capacities exceeding 100 kW. The generated power from these setups will offset electricity consumption, potentially reducing electric bills.
Currently, MORE Power, the local utility company, has 491 net metering consumers and 34 applications in the process. In June alone, the company utilized 237,780 kilowatt-hours (kWh) generated through the net metering program. Notably, Iloilo City Hall was among the early adopters, applying for an initial 60-kW system in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Lifeline Rate program, which benefits 5,610 consumers, is anticipated to expand. During his SONA, President Marcos announced the inclusion of individuals in the Listahanan as beneficiaries to aid in reducing their expenses.
Roel Castro, president and chief executive officer of MORE Electric and Power Corp., emphasized the importance of these programs. “The implementation of the Net Metering and Lifeline Program serves as a concrete step in attaining equitable and sustainable access to energy supply. Through these initiatives, MORE Power encourages active consumer participation while ensuring that marginalized sectors benefit from more affordable electricity and renewable energy, recognizing that access to energy is not merely a service but a right for communities,” Castro stated.
The power utility is investing in modern technologies to enhance operational efficiency and service reliability, aligning with the President’s vision for the country’s energy sector.
