Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it has enlisted the assistance of a top forensic pathologist to examine skeletal remains found in Taal Lake, connected to the case of missing ‘sabungeros’ or cockfight enthusiasts. This initiative is part of the ongoing investigation into the Duterte administration’s War on Drugs.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano shared that the department has sought help from forensic experts at the University of the Philippines due to the limited capabilities of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in analyzing the skeletal remains. Clavano noted the DOJ’s belief in the potential for DNA extraction from the remains, particularly from teeth and hair.
Clavano further explained that the government is also reaching out to Japanese experts for assistance with processing and identifying the remains. He emphasized the importance of utilizing various DNA testing methods and involving experts with advanced technology to address the case thoroughly.
The case remains in the evaluation phase and has not yet proceeded to a preliminary investigation. Clavano reported that around 20 families have submitted DNA samples for potential matching with the DNA extracted from the remains. The families have also been shown recovered clothing and accessories, such as a shirt with a ‘rose’ print, but none have identified these items as belonging to their missing relatives.
