DOH Plans Expansion of Urgent Care Centers in Ilocos Norte

Ilocos norte: The Department of Health (DOH) is considering establishing more urgent care centers in Ilocos Norte to bring healthcare services closer to communities. This initiative aims to improve access to healthcare for residents, particularly in remote areas of the province.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH-run Mariano Marcos Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH and MC) announced on Monday its efforts to open a Bagong Urgent Care and Ambulatory Services (BUCAS) Center in Pagudpud, following the recent inauguration of a similar facility in Banna town. The new center is expected to boost the local economy by providing essential health services and attracting visitors to the area.

Dr. Maria Lourdes Otayza, medical center chief of MMMH and MC, revealed plans to include a hyperbaric chamber in Pagudpud, which would be beneficial due to the presence of diving sites in the region. The chamber would also aid in the treatment of burns, promoting faster healing. Otayza emphasized the need for such a facility, given the overcrowding at MMMH and MC and the limited space for expansion.

The proposed BUCAS Center in Pagudpud will offer alternative health services, including minor surgeries and diagnostic services, during hours when other health facilities are closed. The center will be staffed by personnel from MMMH and MC and will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., extending healthcare access beyond the standard office hours.

In addition to Pagudpud, the DOH is considering establishing another BUCAS center in Badoc town. Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos expressed her support for the initiative, recognizing the positive impact it will have on the health and well-being of the residents.

The expansion of BUCAS centers is part of the DOH’s 8-Point Action Agenda, contributing to the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which seeks to enhance healthcare services and accessibility throughout the country.
