Comelec Receives 200,000 Poll Registration Applications

Manila: Some 200,000 applications for poll registration have so far been received by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) since Friday, when enlistment started nationwide. In an interview Monday, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia reported that around 200,000 individuals have initially submitted applications who are looking forward to casting their ballots in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) set later this year.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia mentioned that they have reached approximately 200,000 registrants nationwide, with reports from various field offices yet to be fully compiled. He emphasized that reaching 1 million registrants is not a primary concern; what matters most is that citizens have the opportunity to register. During a previous registration period from February 12 to September 30, Comelec registered 2.2 million individuals over a more extended period. The current registration effort aims to reach 1 million in just 10 days.

Garcia highlighted the importance of giving everyone a chance to register, regardless of the uncertainty surrounding the elections. Comelec is preparing for the December 1 village and youth polls, despite a bill proposing the postponement of the elections to November 2026, which is expected to be signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. next week. Garcia stressed that preparations should continue even if the election date is uncertain.

He acknowledged the possibility of legal challenges to the postponement, noting that Comelec remains neutral on the issue. If the legality of the postponement is questioned in the Supreme Court, Comelec is ready to respond as necessary. Garcia stated that their stance depends on the decisions of the Executive and legislative branches, and they are prepared to proceed or postpone the elections accordingly.

Garcia’s visit to the Manila City Hall on Monday included overseeing the registration of 621 persons deprived of liberty, as part of the preparation for the upcoming BSKE.
