BOC-NAIA Seizes PHP31.65 Million Worth of Agarwood in Outbound Cargo

Pasay city: The Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA) recently announced the successful interception of an outbound cargo containing agarwood valued at approximately PHP31.65 million. The operation took place at a warehouse in Pasay City.

According to Philippines News Agency, Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno revealed that the shipment was initially declared as “Mahogany wood hand curving design” and “Pack of dried sibukaw woodstick.” However, a thorough physical examination revealed the actual contents to be agarwood, a rare and highly prized wood used in various luxury products, perfumery, and traditional medicine.

The attempted exportation of this cargo constitutes a breach of several environmental and customs regulations. These include the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), Presidential Decree No. 705 or the Forestry Reform Code of the Philippines, and Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. These laws are in place to regulate the trade and export of endangered species.

The operation was executed with the assistance of the Environmental Protection Compliance Division (EPCD) under the BOC Enforcement Group. Commissioner Nepomuceno stated that the confiscated agarwood would be turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for appropriate handling and disposition.

BOC-NAIA District Collector Alexandra Lumontad also emphasized the port’s dedication to strengthening border security against environmental crimes and the illegal wildlife trade. She highlighted the port’s vital role in safeguarding the country’s natural heritage.
