Bicol response units on ‘standby’ after Mayon’s alert status up

Bicol’s Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) has placed all disaster response offices on “standby status” after Mayon Volcano’s alert level status was raised from 1 (abnormal) to 2 (increasing unrest).   In a memorandum issued on Friday evening, Claudio Yucot, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 5 (Bicol) director and Bicol DRRMC chairperson, said the standby status is in preparation for any response to Mayon Volcano’s activities.   “Response assets should be on standby to support response activities of provincial, city, and municipal DRRMOs (Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices), especially chokepoints along the 6-km. radius of the

Comelec commissioners supervise Ormoc plebiscite

Agusan Sur town exceeds 100% vaccination rate

The municipality of Loreto in Agusan del Sur has surpassed its vaccination goal against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) while six others have administered at least the first dose to all target residents.   Data obtained from the Provincial Health Office of Agusan del Sur (PHO-ADS) on Saturday indicated that 33,405 Loreto residents are already fully vaccinated as of October 1.   The accomplishment rate is translated to 109.43 percent of the town’s target population of 30,525, or 70 percent of its estimated 45,297 residents.   The province has a total target of 503,202 for vaccination, or 70 percent of

Red tide confirmed in Masbate Bay; Sorsogon Bay PSP-free

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is heightening its monitoring of Masbate’s Milagros Bay after laboratory results confirmed samples collected in the area are positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or red tide toxin.   The PSP toxin level in shellfish samples collected from Milagros Bay recorded 60.99 to 127.06 micrograms of saxitoxin, BFAR 5 (Bicol) information officer, Nonie Enolva, said on Saturday.   An area is considered positive for red tide when the PSP level exceeds 60 micrograms.   “Latest results indicated the paralytic shellfish poison is beyond the regulatory limit,” she said in an interview.  

Taiwan urges Filipinos to join English teacher program

Taiwan is encouraging more Filipinos to apply for its foreign English teacher program next year.   In 2022 alone, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) Representative Peiyung Hsu said a total of 77 Filipino-English teachers and 11 teaching assistants have been selected from 6,000 applicants.   “We welcome more teachers to join the project next year,” he said in a speech on Friday.   The Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program (TFETP) was initiated by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to recruit foreign English teachers and create more opportunities for Taiwanese students to learn English in schools.   Apart from this, Hsu
