Marcos to convene LEDAC on Monday

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will convene the first Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) under his administration on Monday.   The Senate and House of Representatives previously urged Marcos to convene the LEDAC to fast-track the passage of priority measures, including bills mentioned in his first State of the Nation Address on July 25.   “The priority measures that the LEDAC is expected to tackle include the National Government Rightsizing Program; Budget Modernization Bill; Government Financial Institutions Unified Initiatives to Distressed Enterprises for Economic Recovery and the Unified System of Separation, Retirement and Pension,” Malacañang said Sunday.   Economic bills that

‘Women in Medicine’ pilot PH mission set in Cebu

The Operation Smile foundation will launch its new global initiative, “Women in Medicine” program, in Asia with an all-female international surgical and educational mission in Cebu City from October 10 to 15.   The project will highlight women’s critical role in the health care system in the Philippines and encourage them to take on leadership roles in their professions.   The “Women in Medicine” initiative is piloted in the Philippines, where Operation Smile started in 1982, as well as in Morocco, Malawi, and Peru.   The plan is to roll out the program in all 35 Operation Smile program countries.

Bill filed to cushion impact of high fuel prices

Occidental Mindoro Rep. Leody Tarriela has filed a bill aimed at cushioning the impact of high gasoline and diesel prices by applying progressive excise taxation on fuel amid projection that prices of diesel would increase by as much as PHP6 per liter of gasoline next week.   Under House Bill No. 3628 filed on Friday, the excise tax shall gradually decrease as fuel prices increase.   For unleaded premium gasoline, if the price per liter is at PHP50 or less, the excise tax shall be at PHP10. Philippine National Police (PNP) anti-narcotics operatives on Saturday confiscated some 990 kilos of shabu worth about PHP6.7 billion in Tondo, Manila from a suspected drug pusher, leading to the arrest Sunday of a police officer who is involved in the illegal drug trade.   Brig.
