Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev dies at 92

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War, died on Tuesday. He was 92.   “This evening, after a serious and prolonged illness, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev passed away,” the Moscow Central Clinical Hospital, where he was being treated, said in a statement.   Gorbachev was born in 1931 in a peasant family.   He made a successful career in the Communist Party and headed the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991.   Gorbachev announced a policy of perestroika, designed as a transition to a more democratic and free country, but which led to the dissolution of the Soviet

Brace for possible effects of 2 weather systems: NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Wednesday cautioned the public to be on alert for the possible adverse effects of two weather systems now affecting the country.   In an interview with reporters, NDRRMC spokesperson and Office of Civil Defense Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV added that they are now monitoring possible effects of Tropical Depression Gardo and Super Typhoon Hinnamnor on Batanes and other parts of extreme Northern Luzon.   ‘Hinnamnor’ will be given the local name ‘Henry’ once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).   “Let’s monitor lang, makinig sa mga

76K flood-hit families get P15-M aid from BARMM

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has distributed some PHP15 million worth of relief assistance to flood-affected families in three component areas of the region.   In a report Wednesday, the region’s Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) said at least 76,000 families, or 380,000 individuals in the affected areas, have been displaced.   MSSD Disaster Response Management Division chief Hasim Guiamil said they have so far provided 25,208 food packages to the flood victims.   “Our relief operation is continuing,” Guiamil said, adding that relief missions are also ongoing in other flooded areas of the region.

Batang Pinoy technical working group inspects Vigan City venues

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) sent a technical working group from the Batang Pinoy secretariat to Vigan City, Ilocos Sur last week to conduct a coordination meeting and ocular inspection of the venues for the tournament slated for December 4-10.   Led by Jonjon Fortaleza, the group’s visit on August 25-26 included a courtesy call on Governor Jeremias Singson.   The 2022 Batang Pinoy National Finals will be Vigan City’s second hosting of a multi-sport competition after the Department of Education-organized Palarong Pambansa in 2018.   Postponed for two years due to the pandemic, the 2022 Batang Pinoy National Finals
