Areas under granular lockdown rise to 844 as infections surge

The number of areas across the country placed under granular lockdown due to the continued surge in coronavirus infections has climbed to 844, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Thursday. An additional 79 areas were added on Wednesday to the previous day’s tally of 765. Comelec begins printing ballots for May 9 polls

The printing of the official ballots for the May 9, 2022 national and local elections started Thursday night, Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said. Jimenez said the first set of about 60,000 ballots to be printed are for the Local Absentee Voting (LAV). “Printing of official Local Absentee Voting ballots will begin tonight (approximately 7 p.m.) at the National Printing Office (in Quezon City),” he said in a statement. The next ballots to be printed, he said, are 79,000 manual ballots for overseas voters and then some 86,000 ballots for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Power back in 46 typhoon-hit Southern Leyte villages

Electricity has been restored in 46 out of 500 villages in Southern Leyte after a month-long power outage due to the destruction wreaked by Typhoon Odette. The Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (Soleco) reported on Thursday that as of January 19, at least 19,049 houses and establishments have been energized already out of the 109,145 billed consumers. “As of this posting, 9.20 percent of villages are already partially energized within the coverage area of Soleco.
