Manila: The Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) has postponed the opening game of its national finals due to safety concerns arising from Super Typhoon Uwan. This decision was part of a broader move by professional sports leagues in the region to call off scheduled Sunday games as a precautionary measure.
According to Philippines News Agency, the WMPBL had planned to host Game 1 of the finals between Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire and Rizal-Discovery Perlas at Villar Coliseum. The league has advised fans to await further announcements regarding a rescheduled date for the game.
The Philippines Football League (PFL) also announced a postponement of its Sunday matches, which were initially set to take place at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. Scheduled games included Army versus Tuloy and Manila Digger against Garelli. The PFL clarified its decision following confusion among fans, as Metro Manila was under Signal No. 3 due to the typhoon.
In a proactive move, the men’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) canceled its Monday games at Batangas Province Events Center, which were to include Game 2 of the South Division semifinals featuring Quezon against GenSan and Bi±an versus Batangas. The entire Batangas province is expected to experience the full impact of Typhoon Uwan as it makes landfall in Aurora.
