DepEd and Schools Heighten Security Following Zamboanga Shooting

Manila: School communities across Zamboanga City are aligned with the national government in reinforcing campus safety following the deadly shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) that killed one student and the perpetrator, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, DepEd concluded a coordination meeting in Zamboanga City on Thursday, with school heads agreeing to further tighten security protocols while placing equal focus on the mental well-being of learners and staff, according to a news release.

Eileen Pearl Aca-ac, principal of Lumbangan Integrated School, underscored the need to heighten vigilance. "As a school principal, it's an eye-opener that we have to double our efforts to secure our learners and we have to be cognizant that if we see even a small problem, we already have to take action on that before they escalate," she said.

Lunzuran Elementary School principal Raymond Zapanta echoed a similar message and called safety a "prerequisite for education." "We are reminded that a safe and supportive environment is a fundamental requirement for effective learning. We must continue strengthening our system for prevention, preparedness, child protection, and the overall well-being of our learners and teachers," he said.

Psychological first aid and psychosocial support sessions have been provided to affected learners, parents and employees of AdZU. "Through sustained multi-sectoral engagement and shared governance, DepEd remains steadfast in implementing holistic, preventive measures to protect learners, teachers and personnel across campuses nationwide," it said.

DepEd-Zamboanga Peninsula Director Ronelo Al Firmo also visited Maria Clara L. Lobregat National High School, which received online threats. The DepEd warned those making prank threats and spreading unverified reports of severe legal consequences.
