Super Typhoon Uwan Threatens Aurora and Polilio Islands as It Pounds Camarines Norte

Manila: The life-threatening conditions persisted over Camarines Norte as Super Typhoon Uwan continued to move west northwestward and threaten Aurora and Polilio Islands, the weather bureau said Sunday.

According to Philippines News Agency, in its 5 p.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) located the center of Uwan at 110 kilometers north of Deat, Camarines Norte, or 150 kilometers east northeast of Infanta, Quezon. The typhoon was moving west northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kilometers per hour.

Wind Signal No. 5 was raised over several areas, including the southern portion of Quirino, the southeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya, the northeastern portion of Nueva Ecija, the central portion of Aurora, Polillo Islands, and the northern portion of Camarines Norte including Calaguas Islands. Wind Signal No. 4 and No. 3 were also hoisted over various regions in Luzon and parts of Visayas as the typhoon advanced.

Uwan is forecast to make landfall ‘at or near its peak intensity over the central portion of Aurora’ Sunday night or early Monday morning. PAGASA warned that heavy rainfall, severe winds, and storm surge might still be experienced far from the landfall point or center track, affecting areas outside the forecast confidence cone.

After landfall, Uwan will traverse the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon and is expected to emerge over Lingayen Gulf or the coastal waters of Pangasinan or La Union on Monday morning. Despite the anticipated weakening due to its interaction with the terrain, the typhoon is expected to remain a significant threat throughout its passage over Northern Luzon.
