Iloilo City:Western Visayas The public is urged to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat to prevent heat-related illnesses as four areas in Western Visayas are forecast to experience high heat index readings.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), in its two-day forecast, identified Iloilo City, Roxas City, Mambusao in Capiz, and Dumangas in Iloilo as areas expected to record high heat index readings on Tuesday.
Iloilo City is forecast to have the highest heat index at 43 degrees Celsius, followed by Roxas City at 42 degrees Celsius. Mambusao and Dumangas are both expected to record 40 degrees Celsius. PAGASA classifies heat index readings of 33 to 41 degrees Celsius under extreme caution, when heat cramps and exhaustion are possible. Readings of 42 to 50 degrees Celsius fall under the danger category, when heat cramps and exhaustion are likely.
The Department of Health Center for Health Development in Western Visayas (DOH WV CHD), in an advisory, said heat-related illnesses are among the health risks associated with the El Niño phenomenon. Other potential health effects include the worsening of noncommunicable diseases, vector-borne and water- and foodborne diseases, respiratory and skin conditions, and animal bite cases.
"Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe this El Niño. Prevent heat-related illnesses by drinking water regularly, avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat, wearing light and breathable clothing, and taking frequent rest breaks in cool or shaded areas," the advisory said. The health department also urged the public to recognize early warning signs of heat-related illnesses and seek medical attention promptly.
To prevent heatstroke and dehydration, people are advised to avoid direct exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. "Drink plenty of clean water regularly; do not wait to be thirsty. Avoid alcohol, excessive caffeine, and sugary beverages," the advisory added. The DOH also warned that extreme heat can worsen cardiovascular and hypertensive conditions. It advised people to ensure an adequate supply of their daily maintenance medications.
