CEBU CITY: The chief of the Visayas Command on Monday awarded an achievement medal to a K9 dog named ‘Itum’ for its significant role in combat operations. The Aspin, a local breed tracking dog, was instrumental in a series of encounters that led soldiers to discover the remains of a New People’s Army (NPA) member and a firearm.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lt. Gen. Fernando Reyeg, the Viscom chief, conferred the Military Working Dog Achievement Medal to Itum for its exemplary performance during a four-day pursuit operation from November 21 to 24 against NPA members in Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni in Negros Occidental. “Today, we not only honor our brave soldiers but also recognize the invaluable contributions of our K9 partners,” Reyeg stated, emphasizing the critical role that K9 partners play in mission success.

The operation resulted in the neutralization of eight NPA members and the recovery of several war materials, including eight high-powered firearms. Reyeg highlighted that Itum’s participati
on underscored the effectiveness of collaboration between humans and canines in combat operations. “Itum’s keen senses and determination were instrumental in tracking down the withdrawing NPA terrorists, leading to another breakthrough in the operation,” he added.

In addition to Itum’s recognition, a ceremony held on Sunday also honored 14 personnel from both the 47th and 15th Infantry Battalions for their heroism during the operation.
