Red and Yellow Alerts Issued for Visayas Power Grid Due to Plant Outages

Baghdad:Visayas Another one-hour red alert is scheduled for the Visayas grid on Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., due to the unavailability of several power plants. A yellow alert will also be in place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

According to Philippines News Agency, the available capacity in the Visayas grid is approximately 2,408 megawatts (MW), which is insufficient to meet the projected peak demand of 2,555 MW and the grid's regulating requirement.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that Units 1 and 2 of the Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) and Unit 1 of the Kepco SPC Power Corporation are on forced outage. Additionally, the import from the Mindanao grid is limited due to the planned maintenance shutdown of Unit 4 of GNPower Kauswagan and Unit 2 of Therma South Inc. (TSI).

These issues have exacerbated the supply challenges in the Visayas grid, which has already been affected by the unavailability of 10 power plants in October. NGCP further noted that over 10 other power plants have been on forced outage since 2021, while 18 more are operating at reduced capacities, resulting in a total loss of around 796 MW to the grid.
