Washington: The United States House of Representatives has passed a resolution that reaffirms Washington’s ‘unwavering commitment’ to the Philippines’ defense and calls for ‘more joint patrols’ in the South China Sea. The resolution emphasizes the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight in the contested waters, urging collaborative efforts with other like-minded partners.

According to Philippines News Agency, the US House of Representatives Resolution No. 837 was introduced by Guam’s delegate to the US Congress, James Moylan, in 2023 and was approved on November 20. Moylan expressed pride in the passage of H.Res. 837, highlighting its role in reinforcing the longstanding friendship and mutual security commitments between the US and the Philippines. The resolution also articulates a firm objection to China’s ‘false sovereignty claims to the South China Sea’ and urges Beijing to halt its aggressive actions against Philippine vessels.

The resolution further reiterates Washington’s commitment to the
Mutual Defense Treaty, pledging to respond to armed attacks against Filipino assets, including those of the Philippine Coast Guard. This development underscores the deepening defense relations between the two countries, particularly under the leadership of Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and US President Joe Biden. In support of this alliance, the US has approved USD500 million in foreign military funding to aid the modernization of the Philippines’ external defense capabilities.

During his recent visit to the Philippines, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III affirmed that the US commitment to the bilateral alliance would ‘transcend changes of administration.’ The United States remains actively engaged in Philippine-led maritime cooperative activities, demonstrating a ‘collective commitment’ to ensuring a ‘free and open Indo-Pacific.’

Moreover, the US Embassy in Manila has confirmed the existence of Task Force Ayungin, which facilitates US support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines in
the South China Sea. This task force represents a significant step in bolstering maritime security and collaboration between the two nations.
