Manila: Power outages were reported Sunday in parts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) approaches the landmass of Luzon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) deputy administrator for administration Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV indicated that Uwan’s winds and rains are impacting these two regions. In a video statement, Alejandro confirmed that the typhoon is nearing these areas, and its effects are already being felt.
Alejandro reported that initial information from regional offices shows that Tacloban City and the towns of Palo, Bato, Babatngon in Leyte experienced power outages as early as 4 a.m. Some parts of Northern Samar also reported power disruptions. In addition, power outages were noted in the Catanduanes area.
Alejandro noted that power outages are being reported in numerous locations in the Bicol Region. However, there were no reports of floods and landslides as of Sunday morning. In Albay, approximately 50,000 families were preemptively evacuated by 3 a.m. Sunday as a precautionary measure.
Alejandro urged local government units in the path of Uwan, especially in Southern, Central, and Northern Luzon, to undertake necessary preemptive actions to ensure public safety.
