Negros Occidental Governor Calls for Heightened School Security Amid Rising Violence

Negros occidental: Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has urged leaders of both public and private educational institutions in the province to ensure safe and secure campuses in the wake of violent incidents that occurred within and around schools. The governor made the call as the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) said they are working closely with schools to create a protective environment for learners.

According to Philippines News Agency, the recent incidents are "deeply disturbing and serve as a stark reminder of our shared responsibility to protect our children," Lacson stated. He emphasized the need for vigilance and commitment from school heads, administrators, and management to maintain safe and secure campuses.

The governor highlighted that schools should be environments where students feel safe, respected, and free to pursue their education without fear. Lacson stressed that ensuring the safety of Negrense learners requires more than policies and protocols, calling for active leadership and close coordination with parents, local government units, law enforcement agencies, and the entire community.

In San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, a Grade 9 student of Julio Ledesma National High School was stabbed by a Grade 10 student outside the campus. The victim, 17, was hospitalized, while the suspect, also 17, was arrested with a bladed weapon in his possession. Investigations revealed the incident was triggered by a grudge.

The Julio Ledesma National High School stated that the involved learner had communicated a perceived threat to his class adviser, who advised him not to leave the school. However, the student did not follow this instruction, leaving the campus despite precautionary measures.

In response to national concerns, faculty members conducted class debriefing sessions covering discussions on safety, awareness, and well-being of learners following a fatal shooting incident at the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.

The PRO-NIR noted that the case involves minors and is handled with utmost care and sensitivity by the police station's Women and Children Protection Desk according to existing laws and child protection protocols. The incident underscores the importance of early intervention, parental guidance, and collaboration among schools, communities, and law enforcement to prevent youth violence.

The PRO-NIR encouraged immediate reporting of any signs of violence, bullying, threats, gang-related activities, or other risky behaviors to prevent conflicts from escalating. They emphasized collaboration with families, local government units, educational institutions, and community stakeholders to create a protective environment addressing the root causes of violence and promoting positive youth development.
