MMDA and Jollibee Initiate Plastic Waste Recovery and Rewards Program

Pasig city: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has joined forces with Jollibee Foods Corporation to launch a plastic recycling initiative designed to enhance community involvement through an innovative rewards system.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Plastic Waste Recovery and Rewards Program was introduced during a press conference at the MMDA headquarters. MMDA Chair Romando ‘Don’ Artes announced that the public could exchange seven kilograms of plastic waste for a PHP100 Jollibee gift certificate. Artes emphasized that the program aims to empower residents to actively participate in waste collection and segregation, with barangays establishing organized systems and the Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility (ISWMF) serving as the primary collection point.

The initiative highlights the MMDA and Jollibee’s joint dedication to environmental management and sustainable development, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028. Artes praised the collaboration as an example of successful partnership between government and the private sector.

Jollibee executive Joseph Tanbuntiong stated that the program is part of the company’s global sustainability initiative, “Joy For Tomorrow.” The partnership with MMDA and recycling partner Greencycle ensures that collected plastic waste is processed, recycled, and repurposed. Tanbuntiong noted the program’s contribution to cleaner waterways, safer neighborhoods, and a sustainable future for Metro Manila.

Participants in the program can earn 10 points per kilogram of plastic waste, recorded on their Barangay Reward Card. Accumulating 70 points allows redemption of a PHP100 Jollibee gift certificate. Segregated waste is brought to local women’s groups, community leaders, or designated barangay collection points, then transferred to materials recovery storage for weighing and logging.

The project initially targets 20 barangays in Vitas, Tondo, Manila for six months, with plans to expand to 36 barangays near Tripa de Gallina and Makati City. The feasibility dry run in Vitas yielded 1,059 kilograms of plastic waste from February 10 to March 31, 2025.
