Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has once again appealed to the public to refrain from giving alms to homeless families and members of indigenous peoples’ groups on the streets during the holiday season. This call to action aims to encourage more structured forms of assistance that can help these groups in a sustainable manner.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Irene Dumlao emphasized the importance of organized activities that can encourage indigenous peoples (IPs) and homeless families to transition away from street mendicancy. She urged the public to contribute in ways that align with these initiatives rather than simply offering alms. Dumlao highlighted the agency’s understanding of the public’s desire to help during this season of giving but stressed the need for assistance that supports long-term welfare.
The DSWD’s Pag-Abot Program serves as a key initiative to engage with IPs and other vulnerable individuals, steering them away from the risks associated with street life. Dumlao invited the public to collaborate with the Pag-Abot team, especially during the holiday season, to extend more effective aid.
Located in the Nasdake Building in Pasay City, the Pag-Abot Program has established a processing center that also houses the Walang Gutom Kitchen. This facility provides hot meals to families and individuals living on the streets, embodying the DSWD’s mission to deliver essential interventions as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
Dumlao also appealed to private groups and individuals who are willing to support the Walang Gutom Kitchen through food donations or volunteering. Those interested can contact the Pag-Abot Program via their Facebook page @DSWDPagabot or the WGK mobile number 0916-8297202.
The DSWD reported that the Pag-Abot Program has successfully profiled approximately 14,000 individuals and reached out to more than 8,000 families and individuals living on the streets, demonstrating the program’s impact and reach.
