Legazpi:The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded an ash emission from Mayon Volcano at 822 a.m. on Tuesday. The volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating heightened unrest.
According to Philippines News Agency, the event involved minor Strombolian activity at the summit crater, producing a plume that rose 1,600 meters before drifting southwest. Cameras at the Mayon Volcano Observatory on Ligñon Hill and the Ligao Observation Station captured the plume.
Albay Governor Noel Rosal emphasized in a social media post that human activity is strictly prohibited within the volcano's six-kilometer permanent danger zone. Rosal, who was present at the Phivolcs observatory, mentioned that light ashfall is expected southwest of the volcano, including in Albay's Third District. He added that Phivolcs would continue monitoring Mayon and that authorities do not recommend suspending classes at any level.
The Office of Civil Defense in Bicol (OCD-5) reported that 525 families, totaling 1,729 individuals, had been evacuated from the danger zone. OCD-5 spokesperson Gremil Alexzis Naz stated that local governments are monitoring and caring for all evacuees, particularly those from Camalig, Malilipot, and Tabaco City. Internally displaced residents will remain in evacuation centers while Mayon is under Alert Level 3.
Phivolcs' 24-hour monitoring recorded 1,751 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions, 13 volcanic earthquakes, and one rockfall signal.
