Gatchalian Advocates Enhanced Coordination Between Schools and Police Amid Rising Bomb Threats

Manila:Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has underscored the importance of strengthening ties between schools and law enforcement agencies in light of recent bomb threats targeting universities in Metro Manila. The Senate-approved Comprehensive School Safety Act aims to enhance collaboration among educational institutions, police, and local government units (LGUs) to address and manage security threats effectively.

According to Philippines News agency, Gatchalian highlighted the necessity of community involvement in safeguarding students and teachers. This follows the National Capital Region Police Office's (NCRPO) efforts to raise awareness about bomb threats. He expressed that the Comprehensive School Safety Act, which has been approved by the Senate, is critical for fortifying school security through community participation.

Senate Bill No. 2426 outlines a framework where the Department of Education (DepEd) will work with LGUs and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to establish and update a national school safety framework. The PNP is tasked with helping schools maintain campus security, while LGUs will assist in implementing safety programs. The bill passed the Senate on September 21 with unanimous support but awaits further progress in the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture.

Gatchalian, who played a significant role in drafting and supporting the measure, emphasized that enhanced cooperation between schools, communities, and law enforcement is crucial to preventing educational disruptions due to security threats. He stated the importance of ensuring student safety to facilitate uninterrupted learning.

The NCRPO has already taken steps to bolster awareness regarding bomb threats after incidents at various Metro Manila universities highlighted the urgent need for improved campus security and emergency preparedness.
