Iloilo: Ilonggos are encouraged to adopt cashless transactions following the rollout Monday of the “Paleng-QR Ph Plus,” which promotes digital payments in public markets, public utility vehicles, and other business establishments. The payment system is a national initiative jointly spearheaded by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

According to Philippines News Agency, Iloilo Vice Governor Nathalie Ann Debuque emphasized the importance of this program in her message, highlighting it as a significant step toward integrating digital financial services into every household and business in Iloilo. She acknowledged the challenges posed by the province’s size and the existing digital divide but affirmed the necessity of embracing this digital shift for future growth. Debuque also expressed readiness to formulate ordinances encouraging the adoption of the QR Ph system in Iloilo to safeguard the interests of small entrepreneurs and consumers.

BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat elaborated on the benefits of the Paleng-QR Ph Plus, explaining that consumers no longer need to carry cash, as they can simply scan and input the exact amount for transactions. This system also offers safety advantages for vendors and business owners by directing payments straight to their accounts. During the launch, bank and financial service provider staff were present to assist in account openings, while financial education sessions covered topics such as budgeting, avoiding scams, and increasing income.

The event saw the participation of key figures including BSP Monetary Board Member Benjamin Diokno, provincial legal officer Dennis Ventilacion, DILG-Iloilo Director Carmelo Orbista, and provincial Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Center officer Aulynn Yue Sin.
