Batac:Ilocos Norte has launched its first automated weather station (AWS) to support farmers in making informed, climate-smart decisions. The AWS is designed to provide timely weather information that will guide farm operations and improve crop management.
According to Philippines News Agency, the weather station, located in Sitio Capaoayan, Barangay Tabug, was initiated by the city government in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). It aims to assist farmers with planning planting schedules, managing irrigation, and determining the optimal timing for applying fertilizers and pesticides based on current weather conditions.
The data generated by the AWS will also help in preparing agricultural advisories, enabling farmers to anticipate weather changes and take measures against extreme weather events. Mayor Mark Christian Chua emphasized the importance of this initiative in bringing science and technology closer to farming communities, promoting climate-smart and resilient agriculture.
Local farm owner Jenny Onera expressed gratitude for the establishment of the AWS, recognizing its benefits for the community. The DOST, through project SARAI (Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry), continues to advance the integration of science, technology, and innovation in agriculture.
City agriculturist Allan Abad highlighted the increasing importance of reliable and localized weather information as farmers face challenges such as climate change, dry spells, and heavy rainfall. He noted that local farmers are being taught practical solutions to protect crops, conserve water, and ensure consistent food production. The city is conducting farmers’ field schools in various farming villages to disseminate these practices.
