Manila: Authorities have revealed that local terrorist groups may have attempted to sabotage Sunday’s anti-corruption rallies in Metro Manila, leading the government to enhance security measures and initiate an investigation into potential protest infiltrations.

According to Philippines News Agency, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated during a press briefing in Malaca±ang on Monday that intelligence reports had highlighted a possible terror plot, including the risk of a bombing at either Luneta or the People Power Monument. These sites were the gathering points for thousands protesting against corruption.

Remulla confirmed that security contingencies were in place due to the terror threat during the demonstrations. He noted that over 400 plainclothes operatives were deployed to prevent possible attacks, emphasizing the investigation’s ongoing nature based on intelligence reports.

Philippine National Police (PNP) acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez supported the warning, highlighting the threat of violence from Mindanao-based armed groups. He mentioned the presence of groups like the BIFF (Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters) and Dawlah Islamiya factions, prompting security sweeps and reinforced checkpoints in public transport hubs in collaboration with the Department of Transportation.

Sunday’s protests formed part of nationwide rallies against alleged irregularities in multibillion-peso flood control projects. While most gatherings remained peaceful, violence erupted near Malaca±ang, particularly in Mendiola, leading to clashes with police and several arrests.

House Deputy Minority Leader Leila de Lima condemned the violence in Mendiola, stressing that it deviated from the rallies’ purpose against corruption. She praised Manila police for their patience and tolerance, while urging respect for the human rights of arrested protesters, advocating for due legal process.

De Lima emphasized the importance of respecting legal rights, even as law enforcers faced disrespect during the protests, calling for the lawful treatment of those detained.
