Filipinos in South Korea Urged to Avoid Political Protests Amid Impeachment Tensions

Seoul: Filipinos in South Korea are advised to refrain from joining public demonstrations, the Philippine Embassy in Seoul said Saturday in anticipation of massive protests in the coming days ahead of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment ruling.

According to Philippines News Agency, the advisory from the Embassy reminds Filipinos that foreigners are prohibited from participating in local political activities under Korean laws. The Embassy emphasized the importance of complying with all local laws and regulations to prevent any issues that might affect their stay in South Korea.

The advisory also urged Filipino nationals to observe the usual precautions and avoid crowded and congested public areas. For those who might need assistance, the Embassy provided contact details, including an email address and a phone number.

Earlier this week, rallies for and against Yoon’s impeachment attracted a significant number of South Koreans as the Constitutional Court nears a decision on the suspended leader’s removal over his martial law declaration last year. Yonhap news agency reported that thousands are expected to gather in central Seoul, near Gyeongbok Palace, over the weekend to express their views on the impeachment.

As the ruling approaches, tensions are high with protesters expected to engage in significant street rallies. Conservative groups, including those led by pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon and the Save Korea group, plan to hold rallies in different locations to oppose Yoon’s impeachment.
