Quezon city: Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has called upon the reserve forces to actively participate in safeguarding the Philippines' land and maritime domains. During the 47th National Reservist Week held at Camp Aguinaldo, Teodoro emphasized the vital role of reservists in supporting national defense efforts.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro addressed the critical gaps in the country's defense capabilities and urged reservists to assist particularly in coastal and island regions across the Pacific Ocean. He highlighted the necessity of countering foreign influence and securing the nation's baseline maritime areas.

Teodoro stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and maintaining supply chains for essential commodities, referencing international maritime laws such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He urged the reservists to contribute "our fair share" in securing these vital routes.

Beyond defense, Teodoro proposed an expanded role for reservists in community-based disaster response. He suggested the development of a deployable system focused on critical functions like first aid and emergency response, emphasizing that such initiatives should rely on voluntary commitment.
