DBM Refers Supreme Court Flood Control Petition to Solicitor General, Ensures Proper Fund Utilization

Manila: The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) stated Thursday that it has referred a petition for a Writ of Kalikasan to the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG). The petition seeks to compel government agencies to address the ongoing flooding issues in the country.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Supreme Court (SC) en banc issued a resolution on September 30, directing the Office of the President and other government bodies, including the DBM, to respond to the petition within ten days of receiving notice. The DBM confirmed that the OSG received the SC resolution on Wednesday.

The DBM acknowledged the receipt of both the petition and the Supreme Court’s directive. It stated, “Consistent with procedure, we have referred the matter to the Office of the Solicitor General, which represents the government in such cases.”

Despite referring the matter to the OSG, the DBM emphasized its support for initiatives that promote transparency, accountability, and integrity in the government. The department underlined its dedication to combating corruption and ensuring the proper and efficient use of public funds.

“The DBM reiterates its commitment to upholding good governance and proper fiscal management in all government projects and programs,” the statement added.

In September, a coalition of lawyers and environmentalists petitioned the SC to issue a Writ of Kalikasan for a comprehensive environmental cleanup. They urged the Marcos administration to either disclose or develop a master plan for flood control in the country. The petitioners also called for the prosecution of individuals and groups who have exploited the country’s flawed flood control systems for personal gain.
