Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has approved the importation of breeder goats and sheep to enhance livestock quality and strengthen farming sectors, particularly in Mindanao.

According to Philippines News Agency, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. announced that the initiative is aimed at improving genetic quality and boosting sustainable meat production. The department detailed that the importation will include 155 Anglo Nubian bucks, 175 Boer bucks, and 1,190 Boer does, which will be distributed to farms in Cebu and North Cotabato. Additionally, North Cotabato will receive 260 Dorper rams and 4,050 Dorper ewes.

Tiu-Laurel explained that funding for the project has been secured under the 2024 budget, with procurement overseen by the National Livestock Program. The imported animals must meet specific weight and age requirements to ensure quality. Anglo-Nubians are valued for milk and meat, while Boer goats and Dorper sheep are sought for their superior meat yield, with prices ranging from USD500 to USD5,000.

The animals are expected to arrive within 90 days after the issuance of the notice of award, following a formal bidding process.
