Manila: An estimated 5,000 families, equivalent to 14,000 individuals, have been preemptively evacuated in four regions in Luzon amid the threat of Super Typhoon Nando, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Monday. Interviewed during Integrated State Media’s special coverage on Nando aired on PTV-4, OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo stated that these families are from the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castillo reported that these figures are based on their monitoring as of Monday morning. “Itong ating mga kababayang nasa baybayin dagat, kasama sila dun sa na-preemptive evacuate na ng ating mga lokal na pamahalaan (Residents in coastal areas were among those preemptively evacuated by local governments),” he said.
Castillo noted that the preemptive evacuation began last Friday and continued over the weekend. This action followed the preemptive evacuation advisory issued by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to local government units concerning the track of Nando.
The typhoon was last observed over the coastal waters of Babuyan Island, Calayan, Cagayan at 1 p.m., carrying maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gusts reaching 295 kph. The state weather bureau predicts that the cyclone will pass very close to or make landfall over Calayan Island on Monday afternoon.
