Manila: The Senate impeachment court on Tuesday suspended hearings for two days to allow the prosecution and defense to sort and mark more than 1,800 bank, insurance, and other financial records ahead of the unexplained wealth phase of Vice President Sara Duterte's trial. Presiding officer Francis 'Chiz' Escudero announced that no trial would be held Wednesday and Thursday, with proceedings set to resume Monday, Sept. 14.

According to Philippines News Agency, the pause in proceedings is necessary to manage the large volume of documents submitted in response to subpoenas issued by the impeachment court. House of Representatives prosecutor Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno highlighted the need for time to mark these exhibits, which include bank and insurance records crucial to the trial.

Defense counsel Michael Poa did not object to the suspension, acknowledging the need for both parties to prepare their respective documents. The financial records are anticipated to play a significant role as prosecutors aim to present evidence related to allegations of unexplained wealth under Article II.

Escudero noted the Senate's tight schedule, as it juggles the trial and deliberations on the proposed 2027 national budget. Although the defense initially requested two weeks to review the records, the court instead offered flexibility in cross-examining witnesses while allowing the prosecution to continue with subsequent witnesses if needed.

Marking sessions will commence at 10 a.m., with logistical coordination occurring alongside budget hearings. Escudero acknowledged the resource constraints faced during the budget deliberations and emphasized the importance of efficient trial proceedings. Diokno was also instructed to submit the prosecution's witness list and any requests for subpoenas or stipulations to ensure the trial proceeds as planned on Monday.
