Cebu: A 23-year-old vlogger and an 8-year-old boy died in separate firecracker-related incidents in Cebu province during New Year’s Eve celebrations, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The tragic events have raised concerns about the safety and regulation of fireworks in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cyril John Remis, a resident of Barangay San Roque, Asturias, was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital after a firework exploded near his chest. Remis was reportedly lighting fireworks with neighbors when he approached a bombshell-type firework that failed to ignite, mistakenly believing it to be a dud. As he attempted to handle the device, it detonated, causing fatal injuries to his chest and face. The Asturias police reported that the explosion was powerful enough to incapacitate Remis instantly.

In a separate incident in Talisay City, an 8-year-old boy died while three others sustained injuries from a firecracker explosion in Purok Kamunggay, Barangay Cadulawan. The group was struck by debris, including broken tiles and rocks, following the detonation of a firecracker known as ‘Goodbye Philippines’ during the celebrations. Authorities are currently investigating the Talisay incident to determine the accountability for the use of the banned firecracker, which is strictly regulated under local laws.

The incidents have prompted local authorities to reiterate the importance of adhering to firework regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
