CAGAYAN DE ORO: Northern Mindanao experienced a relatively peaceful New Year’s celebration this year, with local police taking significant action against the sale and use of illegal firecrackers. The Police Regional Office (PRO) 10 reported that the festivities concluded with minimal incidents, demonstrating the effectiveness of enhanced security measures.

According to Philippines News Agency, Police Regional Office 10 chief Brig. Gen. Jaysen de Guzman stated that only three firecracker-related incidents and two cases of illegal firearm discharge were recorded from December 23 to December 31, 2024. The police chief attributed the peaceful celebrations to proactive security measures and strong community support, which played a pivotal role in maintaining order and safety throughout the festive period.

In December, law enforcement officials seized illegal firecrackers valued at PHP150,867. A portion of these, worth PHP42,745, was destroyed by the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office. The Bukidnon Police Provincial Office also confirmed the destruction of several seized illegal firecrackers on December 31, underscoring the regional commitment to curbing the use of unauthorized pyrotechnics.

Brig. Gen. De Guzman emphasized the importance of continued vigilance as work and classes resume on Thursday, instructing police personnel across the region to maintain their heightened security presence. The efforts to ensure a safe and orderly environment reflect the ongoing dedication of Northern Mindanao’s police force to public safety and community cooperation.
