Vigan city: The Vigan City government, through its Public Safety and Traffic Management Division, announced that starting July 1, the use of electric vehicles in the city will be strictly regulated.
According to Philippines News Agency, the new rules approved by City Ordinance No. 09 require e-vehicle drivers to be at least 18 years old, and their vehicles must be roadworthy with appropriate safety features. The ordinance is designed to ensure safer roads, better traffic management, and public safety as the use of e-bikes, e-scooters, e-trikes, e-motorcycles, and other electric vehicles continues to grow in the city.
E-vehicle users must drive responsibly to avoid penalties ranging from PHP200 for a first offense to PHP1,000 for a third offense. This includes following parking rules and traffic laws, not overloading passengers, wearing helmets on two-wheeled vehicles, and avoiding the use of mobile phones, alcohol, or drugs while driving.
The Vigan City government emphasized the importance of community cooperation, stating, "Let us work together to keep Vigan safe, orderly, and pedestrian-friendly." The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Vigan recently approved the electric vehicle ordinance after observing a rising number of electric vehicles in the city, noting that its regulation was not previously incorporated into the Transportation and Traffic Code of Vigan City.
