Raps Eyed Friday in Ateneo Players’ Fatal Drowning

Manila: Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday said authorities are close to completing their fact-finding investigation into the June 8 team-building activity in Aurora province that resulted in the deaths of two Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) student-athletes.

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla stated that ADMU President Fr. Roberto 'Bobby' Yap, Vice President for Administration Fr. Nemesio Que, and businessman Manny Pangilinan, chairman and trustee of the MVP Sports Foundation, are expected to be interviewed by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) before the investigation report is submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ). He mentioned that criminal charges could be filed as early as Friday in connection with the incident.

Remulla noted that investigators have documented more than 1,200 pages of testimonies from various resource persons and are close to completing the case buildup. He emphasized the extensive nature of the investigation, with interviews conducted with almost a hundred individuals, resulting in substantial documentation.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. added that the CIDG is expected to recommend charges against 10 to 11 members of the Ateneo men's basketball coaching staff based on evidence gathered during the investigation. He indicated that the PNP will forward these records of investigation to the prosecution with recommendations.

The fatalities, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, drowned during an off-campus training activity at a beach resort in Aurora on June 8.
