Manila: The 81st session of the UN General Assembly commenced with President Khalilur Rahman urging for renewed efforts to rebuild trust in multilateralism. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that restoring confidence in the global system represents "the defining challenge of our time."

According to Philippines News Agency, Rahman highlighted the enduring purpose of the UN, which has, over the years, helped prevent a third world war. He acknowledged the significant yet often unnoticed work of the UN in various global efforts, such as providing food to millions, supporting peace and security, combating diseases, and addressing complex challenges.

Rahman recognized the UN's shortcomings, noting ongoing conflicts, fragile development, and worsening climate impacts. He pointed out that these issues have eroded faith in collective action, creating a trust deficit that must be addressed through dialogue and cooperation.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening the institution and earning trust daily. Rahman committed to reviving trust in the UN during the 81st session, underlining the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All."

Guterres supported Rahman's leadership and the session's theme, stating that rebuilding faith in the multilateral system is vital. He identified various global challenges, including conflicts and climate disruption, as pressures on international institutions.

Guterres concluded by calling for diplomacy, dialogue, and collaboration to rebuild trust and ensure a better future for the world.
