MANILA: Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino is spearheading efforts to elevate grassroots sports programs, envisioning a future where young Filipino athletes contribute to excellence and national unity. In a news release on Monday, Tolentino emphasized that sports development is a cornerstone of nation-building. “When our youth engage in sports, they learn values essential to nation-building: discipline, teamwork, resilience, and pride in representing their country,” he said.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tolentino views every young Filipino not just as a potential champion but as a vital contributor to the country’s quest for excellence and unity. From local tournaments to international competitions, he has launched key initiatives aimed at encouraging youth participation in sports. Among these initiatives is the Philippine Reserve Officers’ Training Course (ROTC) Games, a multi-sport event designed to produce future leaders in sports, military service, and other professions. Tolentino highligh
ted the participation of over a thousand reservists and cadets nationwide, aiming to develop skills, talents, and a deeper sense of nationalism among the youth.
At the local level, Tolentino is backing the formation of the Cavite TOL Patriots, a team representing his home province in the inaugural season of the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL). He marked the formation of the team as a new era for women’s sports in the country, following a successful tryout event attended by over a hundred female basketball players in Tagaytay City.
Tolentino also commended the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS) for their efforts in uniting communities through annual sports and cultural events. During the MASTS opening ceremony in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, he applauded their role in showcasing the strength of Mindanao’s youth and fostering collaboration among diverse communities. He urged participants to uphold fairness, respect, and camaraderie, emphasizing that sports develo
pment is about building a stronger nation, not just creating athletes.
Tolentino concluded by noting the tangible impact of sports on national identity and social cohesion, from local barangay tournaments to national athletes representing the Philippines on the world stage.
