Manila: The municipality of Omar in Sulu was officially declared a gun-free area and peace center community through a resolution adopted by the Sangguniang Bayan (Municipal Council).
According to Philippines News Agency, the Army's 11th Infantry Division (11ID) praised the declaration, which was read by Omar Municipal Vice Mayor Juddin Nur Pantasan during a ceremony at Barangay Lahing-Lahing's covered court. This event marked a key milestone in the town's peace efforts. The 11ID stated that the resolution affirms Omar town's commitment to public safety and lasting peace.
Omar Municipal Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon expressed gratitude to barangay leaders and security forces for their unity and support, emphasizing that sustained dialogue and cooperation are critical to achieving the declaration. Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, noted that this milestone was achieved due to the people's willingness to embrace peace, highlighting that security efforts succeed when communities take ownership of safety and order.
Maj. Gen. Leonardo Pe±a, 11ID commander, commended the collective efforts behind the declaration, stressing that choosing peace is essential for progress and future stability. He urged all stakeholders to protect and sustain the gains achieved for the next generation.
