Baguio: Bravery is not limited to giving one's life for the country but also extends to modern-day heroes like ordinary Filipinos who speak out against corruption and assist others during calamities, Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong expressed on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Magalong highlighted that heroism and bravery are traditionally associated with uniformed personnel and those in battle during war. However, he emphasized that in contemporary times, heroism is more pronounced among ordinary Filipinos who challenge governmental wrongdoings, especially among political leaders. In an interview with a local radio station, Magalong praised those unsung heroes courageously speaking up and advocating for justice, refusing to tolerate corruption in government and politics.

Mayor Magalong also commended public and private emergency responders who work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of people affected by calamities. He mentioned an active Viber group that promptly responds to calls, cutting trees to prevent them from falling on houses or roads, clearing debris, and assisting residents experiencing erosion, ensuring safe and accessible routes for the public. The mayor noted the relentless movement of ambulances responding to emergency calls, underscoring their crucial role.

In recalling the rescue and retrieval efforts at a landslide in Barangay Guisad Surong, where 10 people tragically lost their lives and three others were injured, Magalong acknowledged the 24/7 dedication of responders. These individuals, undeterred by the continuous heavy rains, worked tirelessly in hopes of uncovering survivors, demonstrating unparalleled commitment for which no compensation could suffice.

Additionally, Mayor Magalong recognized a backhoe operator who volunteered services without expecting payment and allowed the use of the equipment for free. He also appreciated the donors and groups who raised funds for the preemptive evacuation of hundreds from Barangay Guisad Surong and other areas affected by the cyclone and monsoon rains in Baguio and Benguet.

As National Heroes' Day is celebrated across the country, Magalong urged the public to continue demonstrating bravery and heroism, even through small acts, emphasizing that such deeds hold significant value, even if they go unrecognized.
