Solar Irrigation Boosts Rice Harvests and Livelihoods for Albay Farmers

Polangui:Rice farmers in Polangui, Albay have seen an increase in their harvests following the installation of a Solar Pump Irrigation System (SPIS) by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). The system provides a more reliable water supply, particularly during the dry season.

According to Philippines News Agency, NIA-Bicol spokesperson Ma. Cleofe Baraero reported that farmers in Barangay Itaran used to produce an average of 60 sacks of palay per hectare before the installation of the SPIS. With the new system, harvests have increased to 90 to 100 sacks per hectare, enhancing productivity and creating opportunities for higher income. This project benefits 22 farmers cultivating 16 hectares under the Uswag Itaran Farmers Irrigators Association Inc.

Arnel Reodique, president of the association, shared that farmers previously depended on rainfall, making them vulnerable to water shortages during dry periods. He expressed gratitude to the NIA for the project, which now ensures consistent irrigation and alleviates water availability concerns.

Danilo Tesorero, a landowner and farmer-beneficiary, volunteered his property as the site for the irrigation facility to support the community's farmers with dependable water access. Tesorero emphasized the importance of water, especially during the dry season, to enable planting activities.

In addition to the irrigation infrastructure, the NIA provided PHP9.35 million in livelihood assistance to various irrigators' groups, service cooperatives, and agricultural cooperatives. The program addresses limited access to production inputs, processing and marketing facilities, and other support services for these groups.

The assistance was distributed in three batches the first batch of 10 associations received PHP1.8 million, the second batch of 23 associations received PHP3.85 million, and the third batch of 24 associations received PHP3.7 million. The livelihood interventions aim to strengthen farmers' organizations, expand income-generating opportunities, and promote the long-term sustainability of agricultural communities.

Through its initiatives, the NIA endeavors to enhance farm productivity, expand income opportunities for farmers, and contribute to inclusive growth and poverty reduction in rural communities.
