Manila: Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino has filed a resolution to investigate the potential threats posed by a submersible drone recovered off the coast of Barangay Inawaran, San Pascual, Masbate.

According to Philippines News Agency, the resolution, Senate Resolution No. 1267, seeks to have the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirm if the device, found within the country’s exclusive economic zone, was permitted. The senator noted that the 12-foot drone discovered by local fisherfolk on December 30 is likely intended for research due to its yellow color. Tolentino highlighted that scientific drones are typically yellow and red, whereas military drones are black.

Tolentino emphasized the need for the DFA to determine if there is a permit, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), allowing foreign entities to conduct marine research in the Philippines. The resolution tasks the Senate Special Committee on Philippine Maritime and Admiralty Zones, led by Tolentino, to conduct the investigation.

Tolentino pointed out the numerous unanswered questions surrounding the incident and mentioned that the ongoing investigation by the Philippine Navy is expected to take eight weeks. He suggested that the drone might be part of a broader research initiative with larger implications.

He urged local fisherfolk to remain alert and report any similar devices found along the coast to the authorities promptly.
