Manila: Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson announced that the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee plans to summon former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, resigned Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, and 17 other members of the House of Representatives. This move is part of the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in flood control projects.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson, who is anticipated to be reelected as the Blue Ribbon Committee chairperson, indicated that the panel is scheduled to resume its hearings on November 14. Invitations will be sent through the leadership of the House of Representatives. Lacson stated that after the election, they would focus on sending out invitations via the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, including to the 17 congressmen mentioned by the Discaya couple, such as Congressman Eric Yap.
The senator also mentioned that an invitation would be extended to former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, who may participate in the next hearing through video conferencing. Lacson noted that if Co is abroad, his testimony would only be valid if conducted within the premises of a Philippine embassy in that location. Alternatively, Co can testify first and later affirm his statement before a consul where he is based.
Lacson clarified that he has not personally communicated with Co, and that the invitation would be processed through formal channels. The upcoming hearing is a continuation of the investigation that follows the September testimony of contractors Cezarah Rowena and Curlee Discaya. They identified several lawmakers, congressional staff, and Department of Public Works and Highways officials allegedly linked to the flood control project anomalies.
Lacson also coordinated with Senate President Vicente Sotto III to request finance committee chairperson Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian to vacate the Friday schedule for the committee to proceed with its hearings.
