TACLOBAN CITY: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) are collaborating to launch a science tourism project aimed at increasing awareness and appreciation of science, technology, and innovation in Leyte province through educational tourism.

According to Philippines News Agency, officials from these two government agencies, along with members of the Eastern Visayas Association of Tour Guides and representatives from various travel and tour agencies in Leyte, participated in a comprehensive two-day site assessment from November 29 to 30. This assessment focused on potential science tourism sites across the province.

The Department of Tourism stated on Monday that this initiative marks Eastern Visayas as a promising educational tourism destination. The tour included visits to key sites such as the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining (PASAR) Corporation in Isabel, Leyte; the Energy Development Corporation’s geothermal steamfields in Kananga town and Ormoc Cit
y; the Coffee Processing Center in Ormoc City; and Alto Peak Cafe Chocolate Processing, also located in Ormoc.

Additional destinations featured in the tour are the Specialty Pulp Manufacturing Industry Corporation, Ching Bee Trading, Jackfruit and Camote Processing Facility, and Masagana Complimentary Goods, all situated in Baybay City, Leyte. The DOT remarked that this initiative positions Eastern Visayas as a unique destination where science intersects with adventure.

In a separate statement, the DOST regional office emphasized that these sites provide an educational experience for visitors, offering insights into product manufacturing processes, facility operations, laboratory work, and sustainable farming practices, among other topics.

The DOST and DOT have plans to evaluate these science tourism sites further and develop tour programs specifically tailored to the region’s offerings. The overarching project aims to merge science and tourism, thereby creating educational and immersive experiences that h
ighlight Leyte’s rich scientific and natural heritage.

A DOST official stated that the science tourism branding suggests an exciting journey into the realm of science, which could serve as a significant attraction for individuals interested in both science and travel. The DOST Leyte provincial office, in conjunction with the DOT Eastern Visayas regional office, aspires to craft innovative tourism products that not only draw visitors but also enhance scientific awareness and appreciation.
