Quezon city: The Quezon City government raised serious concern over the continuous rise in leptospirosis cases due to persistent rains resulting in flooding. In a statement on Thursday, the city government said 207 leptospirosis cases and 24 deaths were recorded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 3, according to the QC Health Department – Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD).
According to Philippines News Agency, the city government noted that although the current number of cases is 15 percent lower than the same period in 2024, when there were 243 cases, the public is being urged to remain vigilant due to the reported deaths. The statement emphasized that the primary cause of leptospirosis is exposure to floodwaters or dirty water contaminated with rat and other animal urine. The recent spate of typhoons and the southwest monsoon have resulted in continuous rains and flooding, increasing the risk of infection, particularly in low-lying areas.
Leptospirosis cases in the city were reported from patients aged five to 75, with a majority of cases occurring in men aged 41 to 50. In July alone, 115 new cases were reported, with 85 percent of patients seeking medical attention three or more days after the onset of symptoms. The QCESD indicated that delays in seeking medical help might have contributed to the complications or deaths associated with the disease.
Health officials have identified several challenges in controlling the spread of leptospirosis, including prolonged flooding due to clogged drains, poor waste management, and lack of environmental sanitation, which promote rat infestation. Additionally, there is low public awareness of the dangers of wading in floodwaters without protection, and many people delay consultation or treatment until symptoms become severe, contributing to the rise in cases and fatalities.
The local government reiterated its reminder to the public to avoid wading in floodwaters, and if unavoidable, to wear boots or other protective footwear. Meanwhile, those who have been exposed to floodwaters should visit the nearest health center for free consultation and prophylactic medication.
