Makati city: The Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) emphasized the importance of reclamation in mitigating flooding, reducing congestion, and aiding long-term poverty reduction during a public briefing with coastal engineering experts from Singapore’s Surbana Jurong.
According to Philippines News Agency, PRA Chairperson Alex Lopez addressed attendees at the event, which coincided with a three-day international seminar in Makati City. Lopez highlighted the multiple benefits of reclamation, including the creation of safer resettlement sites and new economic zones that alleviate pressure on overcrowded communities. He noted that these efforts align with the President’s active approach to flood control.
Lopez stressed the need for immediate interventions to be supported by long-term solutions. These include reducing population density in informal-settler areas and relocating families to sustainable, well-planned reclaimed sites. He explained that this approach opens up opportunities for communities and reduces pressure on densely populated areas.
The briefing included a presentation by Surbana Jurong’s coastal engineering experts, who shared Singapore’s successful flood management strategies. Lopez emphasized the value of global insights as the Philippines works to enhance its resilience against frequent climate and coastal hazards.
