MANILA: The Philippines recorded over 19 million inbound and outbound travelers in 2024, marking a significant resurgence in the country’s travel industry, according to data from the Bureau of Immigration (BI). With a total of 14,540,533 arrivals, including 7,922,052 Filipinos and 6,618,481 foreign nationals, along with 15,050,136 departures, the figures underscore the nation’s growing appeal as a global tourism and business hub.
According to Philippines News Agency, Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado attributed the robust travel numbers to the revitalization of international travel and the Philippines’ attractiveness as a premier destination, bolstered by the Department of Tourism’s active campaign to lure foreign tourists back. “These figures reflect a thriving travel industry and highlight the Philippines’ growing reputation as a global hub for tourism and business,” Viado stated.
In addition to promoting tourism, the Bureau of Immigration has been vigilant in combating human trafficking, which has helped maintain the Philippines’ Tier 1 status in the 2024 US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report. The bureau uncovered schemes involving fake pilgrimages, mail-order brides, and illegal surrogacy, referring 998 trafficking victims to the inter-agency council against trafficking and 215 Filipinos to the Department of Migrant Workers for illegal recruitment cases. Furthermore, the bureau barred 140 sex offenders from entering the country.
The BI’s efforts to address child exploitation and abuse have been reinforced through collaborations with various government agencies. Reporting mechanisms, such as the Commissioner’s helpline and the Makabata Helpline 1383 of the Council for the Welfare of Children, were launched to report cases of crimes against children involving foreign nationals.
Other accomplishments include the inauguration of three additional forensic document laboratories at major international airports, bringing the total to six. These facilities enhance border security by verifying the authenticity of travel documents. The bureau has also prioritized partnerships with government agencies to improve interoperability and data sharing, thereby addressing illegal activities and enhancing border management.
The launch of the Cruise Visa Waiver initiative has positioned the Philippines as a premier cruise destination by simplifying entry processes for international passengers. Additionally, the introduction of online applications for student visas and special study permits offers more convenient options for travelers.
Looking ahead, Viado emphasized the Bureau of Immigration’s commitment to modernization and efficiency, ensuring the safety of every traveler. Label-free processing at electronic gates has improved efficiency at key airports, and the program is set to expand with the procurement of additional e-gates next year. “As we enter 2025, we will focus on modernization through advancements in technology and legal reforms to simplify immigration processes and improve overall efficiency,” Viado said.
