Manila: The Philippine Army (PA) has urged the public not to use the term "National Guard" when referring to members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary (CAA).
According to Philippines News Agency, Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala addressed this issue after reports surfaced suggesting that the "National Guard" has replaced the CAA in its missions. Dema-ala emphasized that the term "National Guard" is not recognized under existing Philippine laws and policies, and its usage could lead to confusion or misrepresentation of the mandate, organization, and legal basis of the forces.
The Army spokesperson further clarified that while pilot testing related to the concept of a 'National Guard' has been completed, its final disposition is still under review by the relevant authorities. Dema-ala urged the media to refrain from using the term prematurely until an official decision has been made and the necessary legal frameworks are established.
Additionally, Dema-ala highlighted that the CAA operates under a clearly defined legal framework and plays a crucial role in supporting the Armed Forces of the Philippines in maintaining peace and security, particularly in communities. He stressed that preserving the correct nomenclature ensures clarity, accountability, and respect for established institutional structures.
