Dumaguete: The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in Central Visayas has emphasized the significant contribution of Filipino seafarers to the global economy as it participates in the observance of the International Day of the Seafarer.
According to Philippines News Agency, MARINA-7 Regional Director Ronaldo Bandalaria stated that the Philippines remains one of the world's leading sources of maritime professionals, making Filipino seafarers indispensable to international shipping and trade. 'The International Day of the Seafarer, held every June 25, is not only celebrated in the Philippines but throughout the world to honor the invaluable services of seafarers,' Bandalaria said in an interview. He noted that more than 25 percent of ships operating worldwide are manned by Filipinos, highlighting the country's important role in sustaining global maritime operations.
As part of the celebration, the MARINA Extension Office in Dumaguete, under MARINA-7, spearheaded a coastal cleanup activity in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Ports Authority volunteers, stakeholders, and partner organizations. In a statement, MARINA described the activity as a collective effort to protect and preserve the marine environment while recognizing the seas that sustain the maritime industry. 'The clean-up drive served as a meaningful expression of respect and gratitude to the oceans that support seafarers and keep global trade moving,' the agency said.
MARINA added that the initiative reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection, sustainable maritime development, and responsible stewardship of coastal and marine resources. The agency is set to continue the observance with a program for seafarers at Robinsons Place Dumaguete, where a help desk will also be established to provide assistance and services to maritime workers.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard in Negros Oriental reported zero maritime incidents during the celebration of the Feast of St. John the Baptist. Lt. Senior Grade Marionne Abigail Enopia, commander of Coast Guard Station Negros Oriental, said Coast Guard personnel and floating assets were deployed throughout the province to conduct Baywatch and maritime patrol operations following the coastal cleanup activity. Enopia noted that beach destinations across the province recorded low turnout, likely because the celebration fell on a regular working day, with most residents at work or in school.
