PH, Palestine Establish Political Consultation Mechanism to Enhance Bilateral Cooperation

Pasay city: The Philippines and Palestine have taken a significant step in strengthening their diplomatic ties by establishing a political consultation mechanism. This initiative aims to foster a robust and practical cooperation in various sectors, marking a new chapter in the relationship between the two nations.

According to Philippines News Agency, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) formalizing this mechanism was signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Palestine Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin. The signing ceremony took place on Tuesday and highlighted the commitment of both countries to identify areas of cooperation and promote mutual interests.

In a joint press conference held in Pasay City, Lazaro expressed optimism about the future of Philippines-Palestine relations. She emphasized the potential for a stronger and more dynamic partnership underpinned by shared goals of peace, stability, and prosperity. The first meeting under the new mechanism is slated for 2026, setting the stage for ongoing dialogue and collaboration.

In addition to the signing of the MOU, a bilateral meeting was held where Lazaro reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to aid Palestine’s development. She announced that the Philippines is prepared to offer technical and capacity-building assistance to support Palestine’s development initiatives. These projects are expected to be carried out under the Technical Cooperation Council of the Philippines (TCCP), which is dedicated to promoting South-South cooperation.

Furthermore, Lazaro reaffirmed Manila’s support for the two-state solution between Palestine and Israel, stating that it is the only viable path to achieving peace and stability in the Middle East. She underscored the importance of establishing an independent Palestinian state and respecting its right to self-determination as crucial steps towards lasting peace in the region.

This visit marks the first time a Palestinian foreign minister has visited the Philippines since the official establishment of bilateral relations on September 4, 1989. Lazaro noted that this high-level visit is a testament to the growing partnership and mutual commitment of the two nations to further enhance their cooperation.
