Manila: The Philippines and Malaysia’s aviation bodies have joined forces to enhance search and rescue (SAR) operations. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced that it met with its Malaysian counterpart to establish a SAR working group focused on exchanging best practices.

According to Philippines News Agency, CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio emphasized the Philippines’ active participation in regional SAR initiatives, such as the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER), and highlighted the importance of collaboration with neighboring countries for cross-border SAR operations. With the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) as a new partner, both nations are set to develop strategies and improve coordination for aeronautical SAR efforts.

The partnership is anticipated to enhance the region’s ability to effectively respond to emergencies and strengthen the bilateral ties between the Philippines and Malaysia. This collaboration underscores their sha
red commitment to addressing SAR challenges, boosting regional cooperation, and ensuring aviation safety and security across their territories.

Prior to this partnership, Apolonio noted that CAAP had also signed agreements with countries such as Japan, the United States, and Australia for capacity building and technical assistance. He further stated that the CAAP ensures SAR operations adhere to the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, emphasizing inter-agency coordination and community involvement in the Philippines’ aeronautical SAR operations.
